But I can't find index.dat on my (linux) system... I searched both my
master and slave but there is no such file. I had a system crash some
weeks ago and a bunch of files got clobbered... could I be running
without the index.dat file. (my spell checker is not working either).

Spellcheck files reside in surgemail/spellcheck. Add suitable files
there instructions as per index.dat.


To set the spellcheck default language, add a suitable
pref_spellcheck_language setting to config_*.dat file with language
code based on as defined in index.dat.


To set the default spellcheck language to US english add this setting
to say surgeweb/custom/config_global.dat:


        pref_spellcheck_language en_US


Note: Any user who has saved their own surgeweb settings will
override
this of course.
