OK some explanation and updates on this thread. 

For starters, depending on how you installed there are two separate ways that may be running doing the avast updates. 

- Netwin's update command "av_avast -update" : gets run by surgemail periodically and updates the tellmail status output with the results of the updates.

- Alwil software perl update script "avastvpsupdate.pl". This has nothing to do with NetWin and the result of the update does not get shown in the tellmail status output, even though the updated version number should automatically propagate to the running av_avast so gets shown in the tellmail status output.

It looks like Alwil software did change the download URL for the updated virus database files earlier this month, I have just updated the av_avast binary to reflect this. To get this you need version 1.4 available here:

Running this latest av_avast binary on our server results in the following status so I think it is happy again now:

AVAST antivirus blocked 1 of 54 messages (max concurrent=limited to 1)

Scanned message  size: av=11.3kb peak=122kb  scantime: av=0.0s peak=0.0s

av_avast version: 1.4

Avast engine version: unknown

Avast virus database version: 101118-2 (18.11.2010)

Last update run 0.0 hrs ago SUCCESS

Avast scanner uptime 0 days 00:02:31

Messages stored as: failed=0 slow=0 (see http://netwinsite.com/surgemail/help/avast.htm)

Getting the same here and have been for a while now. Really getting cheesed off with this I am constantly having issues with Avast and its updates. About time it got fixed
