If it is under the search limit (defined in the appropriate config file in the surgemail\abook directory) it will display them all else it will need you to explicitly search for the contact you are after. If many addresses are displayed you can type a few characters in the name and it will display the subset.

By design you have to add individual addresses yes as the directory may contain up to many hundreds of thousands of addresses.
