Bob, We run Surge Mail on Windows 7 Pro, you don't need server versions of Windows. We have just over 1,000 users in 180 domains. We are running on a quad core box with 5GB ram. The system is on a 3MB Metro Ether and uses about half the bandwidth. We have no limits on attachment sizes, so we get a lot of large Power Point files and videos being sent. The system is very responsive, normally using just under 15% of processors (with higher peaks) and less than half the ram. To tell the truth, I think this set up would handle 10 times the number of accounts, except maybe the bandwidth. Mirroring works fine in the Windows environment. We sleeted Windows for easy of admin., as we are a Windows shop. Hope this helps.... __________________ Tim Meyer JTMWeb.com 515-277-1990 From: Bob Fera [mailto:bob@serve.net] Sent: Thursday, June 27, 2013 4:02 PM To: Surgemail List Subject: [SurgeMail List] To cloud or not to cloud Hi Everyone, We currently run our Surgemail system on an in-house Linux VM under VMware. We host about 30 domains with somewhere around 300 users and about 40GB of mailbox storage -- nothing too big. I'm getting tired of worrying about maintaining hardware and am toying with the idea of moving this system to the cloud (Azure IaaS or Amazon). I'm wondering of any of you had experience with or opinions on making such a move . Also, if we were to go with Azure, I imagine things might be easier if we were running Windows, so that also brings up questions about running SM on Windows vs. Linux. I know it's a mixed bag out there, so any thoughts/concerns on running a system of this size on either platform would be appreciated. Should it be deemed acceptable to migrate from Linux to Windows, will using SM Mirroring work for that as it does Linux-to-Linux? Thanks in advance for any comments or advice you can throw my way!
