I'm not sure it has ever been used in earnest. When I first setup the 
right pane / examples etc the Google policies still prevented the use 
of adds in ajax applications. I believe those policies have been 
relaxed some time ago now, but the way google ads used to work is that 
the targetedness of the advertising was based on the content of some 
static pages. I think one may be able to provide some "targeting" 
hints to the google add now but it is not something I have even 
investigated or implemented specific features for in surgeweb.
