I edited the rcS file and changed the number from 128000000 to 256000000, then stopped and started Surgemail. Avast started working again.

 

Was there anything mentioned in here before saying that this number needed to be changed? If it was, I must have missed it.

From your offlist email, on the face of it that looks like the kernel.shmmax issue recently noted.

Make sure you have kernel.shmmax set to say 256000000 (as of the last few weeks 128000000 is no longer high enough)
