If all you need is mail, imap works well on iphones, androids, & blackberry phones.

Funambol also syncs tasks, contacts, notes and the calendar. I use the Open Source versions for Windows Mobile 5, Ubuntu (the server) and Thunderbird email plugin, so everything is kept up-to-date between my phone and my desktop PC.
