Almost certain because your private key is still 1024 bit.

If you select 2048 bit in the surgemail interface but the key is still 1024 bits, an error should get displayed (although somewhat hidden / cryptic) to delete the private key file and generate the CSR again. 

It does not automatically remove the original private key as that would immediately stop your existing cert from working - well it used to do that a long time ago and everyone complained about that behaviour not surprisingly... it is just that with the upgrade in keysize the current behaviour is a bit messy.
