Getting messages displayed up the top / pinned to the top is definitely something that should not be too hard too implement and I have actually been pondering for a while. The biggest question is on what basis does a message get pinned to the top of the list and how to store it serverside so it is get mirrorred between servers etc. The best way I see of doing that would be using the labels mechanism - maybe be able to tick a checkbox next to a label to pin to top of list - just means you could not use it with the multiple accounts features. I've also long been wondering about a "remind me in / by" type feature to make messages automatically appear in top the message list when they need actioning, but have them go away in some way before then. Not sure, maybe the two are related (or maybe not) in terms of the problem that one is trying to solve. So any further thoughts on what you or others would most like to see along these lines, please let me know.
