I've used install.sh for LOTS of upgrades since 2004, and am yet to have 
more than minor problems.
It's usually new options that need tweaking eg. when the new Friends 
system was introduced.

SurgeWeb is much preferred by users over Webmail, Marijn is adding 
features rather than having to fix bugs <g>

Otherwise. "it just works" (speaking for FreeBSD and Solaris versions).
OTOH a backup of /surgemail and surgemail.ini is a good idea (zfs 
snapshots in our case).
