I'm not sure about this issue specifically, but over the last few months there have been a few reports of updates from Alwil software getting avast into a confused state and it having trouble as a result. I just checked and it certainly is running fine on our server. I know it is a bit cliche, but I would suggest disabling avast in surgemail, making sure there are no av_avast processes etc running anymore, then rerunning the avast installer and see whether that resolves the issue. Let me know how you go. Reinstall has fixed it as far as I am aware for the other users that had trouble.
