The EICAR test virus was always detected. SO I was confused as to why this caught but didn't catch the zipped viruses. Aside from renaming the ZIp file (_zip.dat) what do you suggest to do to catch zipped viruses?

Yes, it can be done with difficulty, it depends a lot on which one you have.  There aren't any others we directly support but you can see the various mechanisms available here:

I would start by removing the zip file renaming setting.
